Legal Matter Management

Legal matter management refers to the process of organizing, tracking, and overseeing the legal matters handled by a corporate legal department, including litigation, transactions, contracts, and other work assigned to internal or outside counsel. Legal matter management systems centralize matter status, budget, assigned personnel, key dates, and documents, while also supporting task and workflow automation, calendaring, and risk assessment across a department's full portfolio of work. This lets legal teams collaborate effectively, maintain accurate records, and move matters from intake through to close with less manual back and forth. Centralized matter data also feeds spend analysis, resourcing decisions, and integration with a company's broader procurement or enterprise systems, giving legal leadership a single source of truth on what work is in flight, who is handling it, and how it is progressing. Generative and agentic AI are increasingly used within legal matter management to read incoming documents, extract key dates and obligations, draft task plans, and surface insights across a department's full body of matters. Legal matter management can be delivered as a standalone system or as one module within a broader legal operations or enterprise legal management platform that also covers intake, spend, and contract management.
