The surge in legal tech funding we saw in 2024 has continued strong in the new year, with companies in the U.S. and Europe already announcing significant raises. Now, the funding trend continues to expand its global reach, this time with news out of Australia.
On Tuesday, Lawpath, the Sydney-based legal and business services platform, announced that it has secured an AU$10M (USD $6.25 million) strategic investment round led by Westpac Bank, Australia’s oldest bank and company. Along with the investment comes an exclusive partnership between Lawpath and Westpac, aimed at “democratising legal and business services for startups and SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] across Australia” by accelerating Lawpath’s development of its legal and compliance tools, according to the press release.
"Our ambition is to make the law more accessible to small businesses and support them with a broad range of services to help them thrive. This partnership with Westpac marks a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionise how businesses access legal and professional services," Lawpath CEO Dominic Woolrych said in the release.
A decade after its company launch in 2014, Lawpath has been building Lawpath AI, a global legal AI system focused on SMEs, in partnership with LLM developer Anthropic and Amazon Web Services. The proprietary AI system has been trained on over 36 million data points, including case law, legislation, and legal contracts to date. Added to that training data were anonymous interactions with the over 500,000 businesses Lawpath serves across Australia – a new client-count milestone recently achieved by the company.
Since its launch in 2023, Lawpath AI has reportedly delivered more than 433,00 legal insights and fielding almost 5,000 legal inquiries a day. The release estimates that Lawpath AI now handles 30% of the tasks previously completed by human lawyers, while intelligent automation is responsible for a 25% reduction in customer support response times.
The Lawpath platform houses a large library of customizable legal document templates in areas including business formation, employment, contracts, and intellectual property. It also features an online platform that allows users to compare and hire lawyers on a fixed-fee basis.
Additionally, Lawpath offers an online company registration service for new Australian businesses. According to the release, Lawpath’s software is now used to incorporate 7% of all business in Australia.
